Why It’s Important to Replace Your Vehicle’s Spark Plugs

Casey Automotive • March 9, 2013

Though they are incredibly small, spark plugs are also incredibly important. These tiny components are responsible for delivering the spark that makes the entire combustion process capable. Because spark plugs play such a crucial role in the performance and fuel economy of your vehicle, it is important that you visit your auto repair shop from time to time to have them inspected. Here is a bit more information about spark plugs and the importance of replacing them.

Role of Spark Plugs Spark plugs ignite the compressed mixture of air and fuel inside the combustion chamber which helps to generate the power needed to drive down the road. There is one spark plug for every cylinder. Spark plugs also move heat out of the combustion chamber so that the engine coolant can keep your engine cool.

Why Spark Plugs Need to Be Replaced Regularly Every single time a spark plug ignites, the electricity from the shock shaves off some of the plug’s metal tip. This means that spark plugs need more voltage to ignite the air and fuel mixture each time they are activated. Over time, spark plugs will completely wear out and will need to be replaced at your auto repair shop.

Signs That Your Spark Plugs Need to be Replaced While the trained mechanics at your auto repair shop can look at your spark plugs and tell whether they need to be replaced, you can also pay attention to your engine to see if your spark plugs are nearing the end of their life. If your car is stalling, not starting, or notably less fuel-efficient, it’s probably time to purchase some new spark plugs.
