Understanding Critical Brake Problems

Casey Automotive • July 3, 2013

The braking system is one of the most important safety features built into your vehicle. If you notice that your vehicle’s brakes are making unusual noises or losing their stopping power, then there is probably a brake problem that needs to be addressed. Read on to learn more about critical brake problems and how to get them fixed.

Leaking Brake Fluid

Cars with modern braking systems require brake fluid, also known as hydraulic fluid, to operate. Without enough fluid, the brakes will become less effective, and may even fail completely. You should go to a car repair shop for a brake inspection at least once annually, or immediately if you see a brown fluid coming from your car.

Contaminated Brake Fluid

If you notice that your brake fluid has changed color from brown to dark brown or black, the brake fluid is contaminated and needs to be replaced. Contaminated brake fluid can cause rust and corrosion to form in your brake lines, which can cause brake failure.

Damaged Rotor

Do you notice your brake pedal pulsating when you apply the brakes? This is a sign that one or more of the rotors are warped. To ensure your brakes work effectively, you’ll need to go to a car repair shop to get the rotors replaced or resurfaced.

Worn-Out Pads

Brake pads are usually one of the first components to wear out in a disc brake system. You will know that it’s time to replace your brake pads when you hear squealing when you apply the brakes. You should always replace worn-out pads as soon as possible for maximum braking effectiveness. Letting the pads wear out too much will increase the wear on your brake rotors, which makes your brakes even less effective and more time-consuming to repair.
