What it means to be an ASE-Certified Mechanic

Casey Automotive • November 26, 2012

When you take your car to a car repair shop, how do you know if the mechanic is going to be competent or even trustworthy? To give consumers the means to tell whether a mechanic is qualified, the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence came up with a series of well-respected car repair certification tests. Here’s what you can expect from a car repair specialist who has been ASE-Certified.

ASE-Certified Technicians Are Trained Specialists ASE’s rigorous certification exams thoroughly test a technician’s knowledge of car repair. ASE offers over 40 exams that test specific facets of car repair knowledge, such as engine repair, collision repair, brake systems, transmissions, suspension and steering, and more. If a mechanic doesn’t possess the car repair skills and knowledge to answer the questions, then he or she will not pass the tests.

ASE-Certified Technicians Have Experience Passing a series of tests is only one part of acquiring ASE certification . Car repair specialists must also have at least two years of work experience with hands-on car repair. This means that when you get your car repaired by an ASE-certified mechanic that you know that he’s got both the knowledge and the experience to work on your car.

ASE-Certified Technicians Stay Up-to-Date ASE requires technicians who are ASE-certified to re-take their exams every five years in order to maintain their certification. So if you are having your car worked on by an ASE-certified mechanic, you know that he or she is fully competent to work on your car, and is familiar with the latest service methods and techniques.
