The torque converter is what allows the engine and transmission gears to continue turning, even when the vehicle has come to a stop. In an automatic transmission, the torque converter serves as a type of fluid coupling, which allows the engine to spin independently from the transmission. Inside a torque converter, there are several components, including a pump, turbine and stator. When transmission fluid enters the turbine as the vehicle comes to a stop, the turbine changes the direction of the fluid and absorbs the excess torque. Once the vehicle resumes motion, transmission fluid flows out of the torque convertor to supply more torque to the wheels.
