Automotive Repair: Answering Your Questions about Winter Tires

Casey Automotive • November 14, 2012

Instead of heading to a car repair shop to get collision damages repaired this winter, consider preempting an accident by going to an auto  repair shop for a set of winter tires. You’ll have a level of traction that will greatly impact your safety this winter. Get answers to the following common winter tire questions to find out why they’re such an important safety item for driving in winter weather.

Do I Need Winter Tires? Living in the Schaumburg area means that you will get a lot of good use out of a set of winter tires. Winter tires were designed to deliver the best traction in snowy, icy, rainy, or slushy roads, which keeps you safe, reduces the chance of getting stuck in the snow, and makes it less likely that you will need expensive repairs this winter after an accident caused by bad traction. Whether you have all-wheel drive, anti-lock brakes, traction control, or none of the above, winter tires will offer you a dramatic increase in winter-weather traction and safety.

Why Not Just Keep My All-Season Tires? All-season tires are a compromise between summer weather and winter weather. Unfortunately, all-season tires are not quite suited to harsh winter driving. First of all, the tread is not designed to offer the best traction in the snow, so all-season tires offer inadequate control. Additionally, the rubber in all-season tires will not stand up to freezing temperatures as well as the rubber in winter tires; regular tires may wear quickly or even crack in the winter.

But Aren’t Snow Tires Expensive? Though you will be shelling out money on an extra set of tires for the winter, it’s important to remember that you will also be reducing the amount of wear on your summertime tires. Heading to a car repair shop to get your summer tires switched out for winter tires is simple and inexpensive, and it allows you to put your all-season or summer tires in storage. This method means that you won’t have to buy tires as frequently, and you’ll have better traction all year round.
