Auto Parts that Wear Out and Should Be Replaced at the Car Repair Shop

Casey Automotive • March 28, 2013

Routine maintenance will help extend the life of your vehicle and reduce car trouble when the odometer hits 100,000 miles. But there are still a number of components in your vehicle that will need to be replaced at a repair shop along the way. Keep reading to learn about which auto parts normally wear out in high-mileage vehicles.

Suspension Components Depending on how you drive your car, your struts might last upwards of 50,000 miles while your shocks might need to be replaced as early as 40,000 miles. Springs typically last between 80,000 and 120,000 miles. If your vehicle sustains underbody damage, it’s also possible that your vehicle’s CV joints and axles will need to be replaced.

Catalytic Convertors The catalytic convertor in your vehicle should last about 100,000 miles, though you may experience some problems before that. If your vehicle is emitting a funny smell, take it to a car repair shop for a catalytic convertor inspection.

Wheel Bearings Oftentimes a vehicle can go well above 150,000 miles before the wheel bearings need to be replaced. But just like suspension components, your driving style can have a huge effect on whether they will need to be replaced sooner or later.

Mufflers Some drivers find that they need to have the muffler repaired or replaced after a few years, while other drives exceed 100,000 miles without needing a muffler replacement. It is best to ask the mechanics at your local auto repair shop to inspect your muffler for rust damage and loose debris after the 100,000-mile mark.
