All manual transmission vehicles come equipped with a clutch that helps facilitate the transfer of power from the engine to the gears of the transmission to the wheels of the car. Over time, this clutch is bound to wear out and will need to be replaced. Read this article to find out if it’s about time to visit an auto repair shop to get your clutch checked out.
Slipping
Clutches are supposed to slip to some degree—but only in specific circumstances, such as when you engage the clutch or when you change the gears. If, however, the clutch is fully released and you experience some slipping, then you know that the clutch isn’t holding firm and it is probably worn out. Slipping should be most noticeable during acceleration, when driving up a hill, or when you’re going along at a low speed in a high gear. If your clutch is slipping, get it replaced at an auto repair shop as soon as possible.
Chattering
When you engage the clutch to shift gears, do you experience a grabbing or jerking? If so, you’ve probably got a clutch or flywheel problem. This issue could be a quick fix if you go to a repair shop as soon as possible, but if you wait too long to get the issue looked at by a mechanic, you could be faced with more serious transmission problems.
Unusual Noises
If you hear squealing, growling, chirping, there are a variety of clutch problems that could be going on. It’s important to get your auto into a repair center as soon as possible to get the problem fixed, as it could be a leak that will cause further problems.
Partial Release
If your clutch doesn’t completely release when you press the clutch pedal to the floor, then you need to be very careful about driving your car anywhere. A clutch that won’t release can cause your gears to grind during gear shifting, can cause your auto’s engine to stall, or can even prevent you from shifting your transmission into gear.
