Ways to Maximize Your Vehicle’s Battery Life

Imagine being stuck with a dead battery while you’re on your way to work, or when you’re caught out somewhere in the rain. You can reduce the likelihood of these scenarios if you take steps to extend your car’s battery life and get it replaced at a car repair shop before the warranty expires. Here are some of the most effective ways to ensure maximum battery life:

Keep Your Battery Clean

Like most other car products, a car battery works best when it is kept clean. Use a brush and a moist rag to keep the battery clean and it will be less likely to suffer from corrosion buildup. A surprising number of batteries are too dirty or corroded to function. If your battery looks really dirty, take it to a car repair shop to have it checked out.

Don’t Take Your Vehicle on Short Trips

In addition to being taxing for the engine, short trips are also bad for the battery. Consolidate all of your trips into one to help extend battery life. If you are thinking about taking a short trip, consider walking or taking your bike instead.

Insulate Your Battery

Wrapping your battery in an insulating blanket is not just for wintertime; it can actually keep your battery cool in the summertime. Doing this will extend your battery life in the long run, and also improve its reliability on a hot day.

Disconnect the Battery

If you know that you won’t be driving for a couple of weeks, disconnect the battery. This will save it from discharging inside your car while you are gone, which means you won’t have to go to the trouble of jumping it when you’re ready to drive again.
