All tires on the market go through a Uniform Tire Quality Grading (UTQG) test, issued by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Under this testing process, a tire’s tread wear, traction, and temperature are tested.
Thread wear is tested by driving a car under specific conditions similar to the average driver. They are given a number rating based on the tests, with a higher number meaning the tires will have a longer life-span.
Tires are giving traction ratings: AA, A, B, and C. AA marks the top of the scale in quality traction.
Tires are given A, B, and C ratings for how well they handle the build-up of heat. Excessive heat build-up can reduce the life-span of tires, sometimes even resulting in driving failure.
